What is a Research Paper?

Papers vs. Research Papers

A paper about nutrition might include your personal ideas and opinions about nutrition.

A research paper about nutrition includes your personal ideas and opinions about nutrition + books, articles, and websites that include research and data about nutrition.

These sources -- books, articles, and websites -- provide information from experts who have studied this topic and primary sources from people with first-hand experience.

Keywords

Sometimes you have to play around with keywords for a while to find the right terms.  If you were looking for information about your health, you might try different keywords:

  • Health
  • Diet
  • Food habits
  • Nutrition
  • Nutrition Policy
  • Obesity
  • Overweight
  • Physical fitness
  • Exercise

As you do your research, keep a list of keywords that help you get to the information you are looking for.

Why do Research?

What role does food play in your health?  Who has access to healthy food?  Why have diseases such as diabetes risen so dramatically in this country?

Doing research helps you learn more about a topic.   Want a book about this topic?  An article?  A website?
