What is a Research Paper?

Papers vs. Research Papers

A paper about the Maya might include your personal ideas and opinions about Mayan history or culture.

A research paper about the Maya includes your personal ideas and opinions about the Maya + books, articles, and websites about Mayan history and culture.

These sources -- books, articles, and websites -- provide information from experts who have studied this topic and primary sources from people with first-hand experience.

Keywords

Sometimes you have to play around with keywords for a while to find the right terms.  If you were looking for information about the Maya, you might try different keywords:

  • Maya or Mayan
  • Indigenous
  • Indians -- Mexico
  • Indians -- Central America
  • Archaeology -- Mexico
  • Archaeology -- Central America
  • Mayan Mythology
  • Mayan Languages

As you do your research, keep a list of keywords that help you get to the information you are looking for.

Why do Research?

Doing research helps you learn more about a topic.  Would you like to learn more about the Maya?  Want a book about this topic?  An article?  A website
