What About Searching with Google?

There's a LOT to be found using open search algorhythms like Google, especially in the field of early childhood education *. But the problems with that are:

  1. Retrieving way too many results, and getting overwhelmed by search results;
  2. Sorting out the commercial advertisements; and
  3. Sifting through the search results to narrow down to quality sources.

If you want to try this, some tips to overcome those problems are:

  1. Use specific terms and phrases (for example, theories of early childhood education ).
  2. Use Google Scholar (scholar.google.com)  instead of open Google to avoid advertisements and narrow the search results to scholarly publications.
  3. Use the tab above for Evaluating Information in Webpages for tips on how to assess your Google search results.

* Many educators are committed to the concept of Open Educational Resources and Open Access publishing; and it is possible to find articles, book chapters, and even entire ebooks online at no cost to you, like this resource from Australia

Nolan, A. and Raban, B. 2015. Theories into Practice: Understanding and rethinking our work with young children. Teaching Solutions [AU].
