Historical Background Article

Due, Nov 16: As a historian you have been called upon to write an article for a popular magazine (Newsweek, Time, The Nation, etc.)which will inform readers about the historical roots of a particular event in the Middle East. You will pick a topic based on current news sources (Either American or Middle Eastern) and then using readings from the class and at least two outside sources you will write a five page essay detailing the historical origins of a particular event, issue, community, conflict, or other topic.

5 pages, double spaced, 11 pt Times New Roman font, 1” margins

Include the following in your article:

1.    Refer to current events. What is happening that you are describing? Why is it an issue?

2.    What in Middle East History explains the causes of the event or issue you are discussing?

3.    Summarize the history relevant to your topic. Summarize as if your reader knows nothing, and has just picked up a magazine and flipped to your article.

4.    Make predictions. Based on your knowledge what do you think will happen? What do you think is likely?
