ENGL 110: Composition, Literature, and Critical Thinking

Welcome, ENGL 110 students! 

 

This guide will supply you with information and resources that will help you in your class, and specifically information related to the various liteary and critical theories you'll be discussing.

Course Description:

The study of novels, short stories, poetry, and drama written by diverse authors. The course covers how factors such as race, culture, gender, and historical context inform texts. Students write analytical essays that demonstrate critical interpretation and the use of evidence and research. Prerequisites: English 100 or English 105. Transfer Credit: UC/CSU

 

Thematic Focus:

With a focus on different literary genres - including a novel, a short story collection, and a book of poetry - we will be exploring themes of childhood and identity across different time frames and cultural contexts. Through lectures, class discussions, research projects, and group presentations, we will practice different ways to interpret literature. As the second transfer-level reading and composition course, the goal of English 110 is to survey a sample of critical theories that will deepen, inform, and transform your understanding and appreciation for literature.
