Sources to Consider: Then & Now
Potential focus areas
1. Ethnic Studies program and courses (ex., how did they come to be?, which classes were taught or not taught?)
- Ethnic studies, Chicano Studies, Native American Studies, Asian American Studies
- Records in the archives tell some of the story
2. Students from other countries
- Examine the language in the course catalogs and literature (ex., "foreign students" "Orientals") ; does this mirror changes in societal attitudes and language used outside of the college? When does language change and why?
- OR international students. Enrollment, recruitment, which countries?
- See early college class schedules
- Student newspapers - change from to illegal - to "undocumented"
- Enrollment and demographic reports
3. Serving students now known as ESL (could be combined with 4. below)
- What programs were available then as compared to now? Changing attitudes? Demographics? Reflecting immigration trend
4. Undocumented student populations, services, attitudes
