News Article Databases

Cañada College Library hosts six important news databases you can select from if you're looking for news sources or news photos for your research. All databases are free to the Cañada College College community.

From off-campus, use your OneLogin credentials for access.

Newspaper Databases

Search General OneFile to find current and older news articles from major newspapers like the New York Times going back about 30 years. Also included are journal articles, travel guides and National Public Radio program transcripts (1990-present). Search more than 12,000 different publications on any topic.

This database is most useful for browsing news topics.

Browse by Subject, for example, News & Current Events. Next, select from any of of the 24 topics listed.

Try a Basic Search by supplying your own keywords in the empty search box. You'll need to narrow your search results later.

Use the Advanced Search for more specific search results. Supply your own keywords, range of dates, and the name of the newspaper or other publication you'd like to search.

Search the News (Gale OneFile) database to access major U.S. and international newspapers online to search articles instantly by title, headline, date, or other fields. This database is best when you already know what you're looking 

America’s Historical Newspapers (from NewsBank): Find news articles (1690-2000) covering topics in American government, politics, social issues, culture, literature, discoveries, inventions and much more. Options for searching:

Select an Era from a historical timeline to find news and eyewitness accounts, pro/con articles, and articles about important issues and daily life in the colonies or during the Revolutionary War, westward expansion, the Civil War, Reconstruction, industrialization, and all other major historical eras in American history through the year 2000. Included are illustrations, ads, birth and marriage announcements, obituaries, biographical stories and other articles, exactly as they appeared in print at the time. 

Browse Hot Topics. There include current research topics covering key global issues, and people in the fields of business, economics, crime, politics, science, health, sports, the arts and more.

Newspaper Source Plus is a searchable newspaper database you can use on campus or off.

Newspaper Source Plus includes:

  • Online access to hundreds of newspapers, providing millions of full-text articles you can read, print, download or e-mail.
  • News is updated through out the day.
  • Articles from both major US and international newspapers, such as:
    • The Boston Globe
    • The Christian Science Monitor
    • The Daily Mail (UK)
    • The Irish Times (Ireland)
    • The San Francisco Chronicle
    • The Sydney Morning Herald (Australia)
    • The Times of London
    • The Toronto Star
    • USA Today
    • The Washington Post
    • The Washington Times
    • and others.
  • Newswires (AP, etc.)
  • Radio and TV broadcast transcripts with audio/listening option.

Search tips:

  1. Select the Advanced search feature directly under the blank search box. 
  2. If you're off-campus, log in using your OneLogin credentials.
  3. Type specific keywords for each of your ideas in the stacked boxes and click "search."
  4. On the left side of your screen, narrow the Publication Dates to the range of dates you're looking for.
  5. You can also narrow your search by Publication, for example, The Washington Post.

Find News Photos for your Research

Newspaper Source Plus also has an Image search feature that helps you find high resolution, captioned photos for your paper or project.

1. With out typing any search terms, select Advanced Search.

2. Select Images

3. Input keywords to describe the events or person you're seeking images of

4. Once you've selected the best image, email the record to yourself to save important information about it.

5. In the message you receive, right click on the image to save it as a jpeg for your paper or presentation.
